DC Teacher Departure Survey

You received this text message because you were identified as a former teacher in the District of Columbia who has recently left that position. You may have left because you transferred to another school, resigned, were let go, retired, or exited under other circumstances.

We invite you to complete a survey about the position you recently left. We are interested in learning about your thoughts and experiences about the job, including your exit from the job.

Who should participate?

We would like to hear from ALL public-school teachers who held a position during the 2018–19 or 2017–18 school years and have left those positions, including:

  • teachers from traditional public schools (i.e., DCPS)
  • teachers from public charter schools
  • teachers that were transferred, resigned, were let go, retired, or left under any other circumstances

Who is conducting the survey, and why?

The survey is being administered by Bayne LLC on behalf of the D.C. State Board of Education. The State Board’s goal is to better understand what causes teachers to leave positions and issues surrounding their exit. The State Board is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the District on education policy.

The State Board is not involved in staffing or hiring decisions in traditional public, public charter, or private schools. The State Board is not an affiliate, in any way, of DCPS, any charter school, or any other government agency (including the Office of the State Superintendent of Education). The State Board is an independent voice on educational issues.

The insights gathered in this survey may help the State Board understand how the District of Columbia’s public schools, including individual schools, can retain current teachers.

What types of questions will be asked?

We’ll ask you to describe the most recent position you left, why you left the position, your perceptions of the school and your position, and what you are or will be doing next in your career. We are ONLY asking about the most recent position that you held and left during the 2018–19 or 2017–18 school year, and not other teaching positions that you might have had with the District of Columbia or other school systems. We’ll also ask demographic questions, such as your age and gender.

How will my responses be used? Will my responses affect my job or my ability to get hired?

Your responses to the survey questions will be de-identified (i.e., your name will be withheld and your data will be assigned a random identification number) and analyzed in aggregate with responses from other teachers. Only Bayne LLC, an independent, contracted researcher will have access to your data.

Your responses are anonymous and confidential. Individual responses will not be released to school administrations or other city officials. Previous and prospective employers will not have access to your individual responses at any time in the future.

How long will the survey take?

We anticipate that the survey will take no more than 10 minutes to complete. You should be able to complete the survey in one sitting. There is no time limit on completing the survey however so take as long as you need.

Will I be compensated for my time spent on the survey?

The first 250 individuals to complete the survey will receive a $10 Amazon gift card.
